i’ve totally fucked up in the past. i’ve said hurtful & damaging things. hell, i’ve been an oversharing, outspoken idiot on the Internet for more than a decade, of course i’ve had problematic opinions because i didn’t yet know any better - nobody is born with a sociology degree, and privileged people often don’t recognize their privilege, and when they’re told about it, they resist it. i’m so grateful that people took time out of their own day (which they totally did NOT have to do; the responsibility to educate does NOT fall on the oppressed) to explain to me why some things i’ve done were wrong. i’ve learned, grown, and tried to use my platform to educate my large audience to learn from my mistakes, as well as amplify voices of those i’ve negatively affected. these tweets just made me think about all these things, so i figured i’d share my thoughts on the subject. i’m so thankful for places like tumblr, which provide me with an opportunity to listen, and share perspectives from communities that i think are often disenfranchised or ignored because of systematic oppression. i’ll never be perfect but i can always be better, one day at a time. just some thoughts! 🐛
